What is West Nile Virus?


West Nile Virus is a potentially serious illness.  Some experts believe West Nile Virus is established as a seasonal epidemic in North America that flares up in the summer and continues into the Fall.  

There are no medications to treat or prevent infection. Most people infected with WNV will have no symptoms. About 1 in 5 people will develop a fever and other symptoms. Seriously infected people develop a serious, sometimes fatal, neurologic illness.


Do birds with West Nile virus die or become ill?

Yes.
West Nile virus was found in the America in 1999, the virus has been found in over 300 species of dead birds. Although some infected birds like crows and jays tend to die more frequently.



What should I do if I find a dead bird?

Call or contact the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Wildlife Services office at 1-866-4-USDA-WS (1-866-487-3297)
